An enquiry commission must be constituted to probe the incident of mob lynching at Jorhat and death of main accused in mysterious circumstances: Dr Hiren Gohain

Renowned intellectual Dr. Hiren Gohain in an urgent statement has expressed grave doubts about the reports on the incident of mob lynching at Jorhat. This heinous crime took place in mysterious circumstances. The main accused Niraj Das alias Kola Lora was arrested and then he died under mysterious circumstances. And it was his father, who reportedly in a drunken state provoked all the disturbance and the following incident, where about 60 people converged on Animesh Bhuyan and his two companions and for 40 minutes kept on beating them, until one of them died. So the connection between Niraj Das alias Kola and his father is one mystery crying for an enquiry. Next, the mysterious circumstance in which Niraj Das alias Kola died, with no witness apart from the police is also subject to great doubt and it requires an enquiry. Therefore, I hope and wish that the authorities will do needful so that Assam does not turn into another UP like state which has now the notoriety of a crime infested state where the police take the law into their own hands and create a havoc on the life of the people. There are also similar allegations about encounter death in UP. So, I think the Assam Police also should wake up and take necessary steps in order to prevent deterioration of the law-and-order machinery. An enquiry commission constituted by people of iImpeccable reputation and standing is the need of the hour.

Dr Hiren Gohain.
