Health Profile of India’s Northeast: Per capita expenditure is the highest in Mizoram, lowest in Assam

Data show that in case of percentage share of government hospitals in hospitalisation cases in the major States, Assam tops the chart with government hospitals accounting for 76.7 per cent of hospitalisations in rural areas and 47.7 per cent in urban areas. Private hospitals in the state account for 21.5 per cent hospitalisation in rural areas and 48.3 per cent in urban areas. The figures for charitable Trust/NGO run hospitals are 1.8 per cent in rural areas and 4.0 in urban areas.

All India percentage for government/public hospital is 45.7 in rural areas and 35.3 in urban areas. All India percentage for private hospital is 51.9 in rural areas and 61.4 in urban areas. The figures for charitable Trust/NGO run hospitals are 2.4 per cent in rural areas and 3.3 in urban areas.

Among other north-eastern states, in Tripura, government/public hospitals accounts for the highest percentage of 96.4 per cent hospitalisation in rural areas and in urban areas of the region government/public hospitals in Arunachal Pradesh account for the highest percentage of 91.2.

Assam’s per capita expenditure on health is the lowest among the eight North-eastern states. It is Rs 1546, according to National Health Profile, 2019 published by Central Bureau of Health Intelligence. Mizoram accounts for the highest per capita health expenditure of Rs 5862 followed by Arunachal Pradesh with Rs 5177 and Sikkim with Rs 5126.
