ASSAM HDR, 2014: POVERTY RATIO IS THE HIGHEST AMONG THE SCHEDULED TRIBES

 

Poverty ratio is the highest among the Scheduled Tribes in Assam. According to Assam State Human Development Report, 2014 poverty ratio among the Scheduled tribes is 40.5 per cent. The report also states that in spatial diversity category too, poverty ratio is the highest in hill areas with 44.7 per cent, where concentration of Scheduled Tribes is the highest.

Among the Scheduled Castes, the poverty ratio is 37.5 per cent while among other backward classes it is 36.5 per cent. Among the general, the poverty ratio is 36 per cent, according to ASHDR, 2014.

The district-wise statistics of ASHDR has stated that among the Scheduled Tribes, the poverty ratio is highest in Darrang district with 48.5 per cent, while among the Scheduled Castes it is the highest in Udalguri district with 48.5 per cent.

In spatial diversity category the hill areas have the highest poverty ratio (44.7 Percent) followed by Char areas with 42.6 per cent and multiple diversity areas with 40.8 per cent.

 

 

“Poverty is significantly high in Darrang (45.5 per cent), Marigaon (44.5 per cent) Golaghat(43.5 per cent) Udalguri (43 per cent) Karbi Anglong (42.5 per cent) Dhubri(415 per cent), Chirang (41.5 per cent), Baksa (41 per cent) Sonitpur (40.5 per cent) and Goalpara(40.5 per cent)â€- according to the report.

This is the first Human Development Report prepared in the country with new UNDP method. Guwahati-based think tank Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development (OKDISCD) and New Delhi-based Institute for Human Development have compiled this 272-page report on behalf of the Planning and Development Department, Government of Assam with support by the UNDP and the NITI Ayog. The Assam HDR Survey, 2013 covered 39,998 households covering 187,511 individuals in 27 districts, 97 Blocks, 95 urban centres, 1972 villages of the state. the report is based on primary data collected in the largest survey ever conducted in Assam for development evaluation. which is ten times that of the National Sample Survey Organisation rounds and about eight times that of the National Family Health Survey in the state.
