The region records increase of 2654 private schools, 82% in Assam during the10-year period
Total number of government schools in the Northeast region has decreased by nearly 11 % during the 10-year period between 2014-15 and 2023-24 either due to closure or merger of schools. Private schools, on the other hand, have increased in the region during this period.
The region recorded closure or merger of 8,904 government schools in the reference period. Of these, Assam accounts for the maximum number of 7,919 schools (88.93%). Manipur and Meghalaya are the exception. Manipur recorded increase of 562 government schools while Meghalaya recorded increase of sixteen government schools.
In sharp contrast, number of private schools in the region increased from 9518 during 2014-15 to 12,021 during 2023-24, The region recorded overall an increase of 2,654 private schools, of which Assam accounts for the highest number of 2,171 new private schools (81.8%).
Among all states in the region, Meghalaya witnessed a decline in number of private schools. There were 2,274 private schools in Meghalaya in 2014-15 which decreased to 2,152 in 2023-24 following closure of 122 private schools during this period. The state recorded 7,763 government schools in 2014-15, which increased to 7,779 in 2023-24.
Sikkim records a decline of both government and private school. Four government schools either closed or merged and 29 private schools closed during the 10-year period.
Among all states, the highest number of 29,439 government schools closed or merged in Madhya Pradesh followed by Uttar Pradesh with closure or merger of 25,126 government schools.
Bihar, on the other hand, bucked the trend by recording increase of 3,829 government schools during this period. The state had 74,291 government schools in 2014-15 which increased to 78,120 in 2023-24.
